Weeds.

Come summer, they’re everywhere. One morning as you’re walking out the door, past your flower bed you spot one. – – > then suddenly and all at once your yard is full of weeds!

They have taken over.

You’re officially living in a jungle of weeds.

Until.

You take the time, identify the perfect weed killer and go to work.

It only takes one choice – one open door – for the weeds of temptation to completely overcome the totality of your life.

“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8

Lets get real for a minute. Satan is attractive! If Satan wasn’t attractive we wouldn’t fall for his schemes. We like the things he tells us! We sometimes allow the lies he spews to make us feel safe. Notice I said feel safe – not make us safe. As believers feelings can never be a defining factor in our lives.

When choosing to pursue a Kingdom lifestyle we are saying no to decisions based off of feelings.

The danger zone: And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” Matthew 7:26-27

WHAT DO WEEDS LOOK LIKE IN THE DAILY GRIND?

Weeds look like allowing a certain person in your life – even though you know they are pulling you further and further from the Father – and you’re not pulling them closer!

It looks like addiction – pornography, shopping, drug/alcohol, television, spousal! Anything that is not the trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit)! I dare say you could even be addicted to the idea of the trinity and not engaging in relationship with the trinity!

Weeds look like lying – beginning with a couple “white lies” or small exaggerations and suddenly you find yourself a pathological liar!

Judgement.

Criticism.

Anger.

Irrationality.

Gossip.

Fear.

Religion.

All listed above are examples of weeds you could have in your own life. Starting small they begin to rapidly take over your entire existence. You become obsessive. You begin to give your weed drastically more attention or say over your life than the Father. Once this occurs, your relationships, your sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, your convictions, your identity and your fate all become compromised. You transform from a Kingdom focused lifestyle to a worldly lifestyle with the snap of Satan’s slimy fingers. We give him an inch and he ends up taking 18,000 miles.

Deeply rooted inside of me have been the weeds of fear and insecurity. Fear in His ability to provide for me physically. Fear in trusting Him with my calling. What is my calling you may ask? He tells me its worship! There are many ways that I worship with my life; However; the way that he has most consistently called me to – – the ways I have refused to honor him in is singing! He has given me a voice, he has given me a passion for it – – > But the weeds of FEAR and INSECURITY have been firmly rooted within the deepest cracks inside my soul. Fear of rejection. Fear of not being good enough. Fear of doing it wrong. Fear of becoming too focused on my presentation vs. my heart posture!

Where they came from – – I have yet to identify.

Where they are going – – straight to Hell.

I have been so challenged the past couple months by my I N C R E D I B L E church body. The teachers, the leaders, the body as a whole has been challenging my fearful heart unceasingly. The chains being cracked – my soul crying out desperately for them to be shattered.

WHAT IS OUR SPIRITUAL WEED KILLER?

“He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.” Luke 6:48

“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” Colossians 2:6-7

HOW DO WE SPRAY OUR WEED KILLER ALL OVER THE CRACKS IN OUR HEART?

John 15:10-11 We abide!

We allow ourselves to be completely consumed by the presence and knowing of Jesus! We hunger most desperately for relationship with Him. To honor Him. To know Him.

deeply.

intimately.

We give Him access to our entire lives! We give Him say over every piece. We allow Him to come in and become the ultimate accountability partner. Talking through with Him every situation, every thought, feeling, taking them captive and allowing Him to transform them into His truths!

Abide.

At first it doesn’t come naturally.

At first it doesn’t feel fun.

Slowly and then all at once His radical love takes over our entire life!

We become an addict.

An addict of relationship with Him.

Craving him at all hours of the day and night.

Not being satisfied with the mundane.

Come and go, in and out – in a casual, spontaneous fashion are eliminated.

Passion.

Hunger.

Desire all take over!

When all we want is King Jesus – – there is no room for weeds in our lives. The life of a weed can not be sustained in the hungry believer who is being molded and refined daily by the King of the universe!

Take some time now to read Matthew 13: 24-43, after reading this, really process and reflect on the parables.

  • Where in these stories to you fall?
  • Are you the world or are you the Kingdom?
  • What are some practical changes you can begin to make this week to begin weeding the cracks in your foundation?
  • Write them down! Choose an accountability partner – go deep with this person! Don’t hold back from them, you will only be doing yourself a disservice. Allow this person to have say in your life, influence over your choices (not that they can make them for you, but that they can weigh situations with you – having a heavy weight in their opinion!).
  • Choose this person wisely! you’re trusting them with your life!
